ONLINE LEARNING PROGRAMS IN PLACE

When the school closure announcement came out in March, we were quick to take action. We spent the last day of school preparing our students for at-home learning, and we began transitioning to online platforms.

During these past two months of remote learning, GECRC has assisted schools with communications to our families; we’ve gone out into the neighborhoods and apartment complexes to see our students, and we are connecting local community organizations and businesses that want to help our students with academic and food resources. And although our after school program can’t exist at a physical location, we are still serving our mission to help our students strengthen their academic and social skills through virtual support, using Google Classroom, tutoring conferences, and social meet ups.

This remote support will continue into the summer months. Our summer school program will look a little different this year, but we will still aim to provide the same connection, support and care that is the standard of our program.

Our Programs

Elementary Program

The Elementary Program operates from 3:30-5:30 pm (M-F) during the school year. After school, K-5 students spend an hour eating a nutritious snack (provided by the school district and the local Kiwanis Club) and socializing through supervised activities of their choice (drawing, playing on the playground/gym, etc.). During the second hour of the program, students, along with their volunteer tutors, participate in one-on-one or small group homework assistance. GECRC also offers enrichment activities on Fridays such as soccer teams, book clubs, drawing, music, Chess Club, coding, art, and STEM programs. Our current elementary school program is held daily after school at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School and Churchill Elementary School in District 41.

Junior High Program

The Junior High Program meets from 3:30 to 4:40 pm (4 days/week) during the school year and is designed to address the unique needs of 6th-8th grade students, provide homework assistance, and prepare students for social and academic success in high school. Our current Junior High Program is at Hadley Junior High School in District 41. Beginning in Fall 2020, we will have a program located at CCSD 89 Glen Crest Middle School.

Summer Program

Summer program runs three days per week, for 6 weeks during the summer months, and is open to all elementary and junior high students in D41 and D89 who meet eligibility requirements. Programming is aimed at ensuring all children in need have access to academic and social support during summer break to prevent the "summer slide", and includes classroom instruction, mentorship, enrichment activities, field trip experiences and "camp" week.
